On days that I feel my best, I’ve been able to get outside for a walk, cook a healthy meal, feel productive at work, catch up with friends and neighbors, or maybe even read a good book. Although we may not realize it, these simple things are really what make a healthy day and, overall, a healthy life.
One of the best parts of my job is working with our annual GSK IMPACT Award winners – local nonprofits who are helping to make so many people’s days healthier across Greater Philadelphia.
Let’s meet the 2015 winners:
Growing up, we can all remember a special adult who helped us figure out what we were good at and how we could grow. Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania ensures that kids across our community have access to these special mentors, or “bigs,” in their own lives.
Having a fun, vibrant place to play and learn is also an important part of a healthy childhood. Children’s Village provides a nurturing early education environment that is connected to the community and their values.
High-quality early childhood education is important for everyone. That’s why Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children works with providers across the region to improve services for young children.
As kids grow, education continues to play an important role in their current and future health. Education Law Center – PA ensures that all children have access to high-quality public education in Pennsylvania.
We all know that keeping active – and having fun! – keeps us feeling great. At KleinLife, people of all ages can play sports, continue learning and volunteer to help their community.
Writing is not only important in school, it helps us all to communicate successfully throughout our life. Students across Philadelphia come to Mighty Writers to learn to think and write with clarity to support their success in school – and beyond!
Sports can be the doorway to so much more than physical fitness. At Philadelphia City Rowing, students build character, make friends, and feel supported through the sport of rowing.
Our homes and neighborhoods also impact our health. That’s why Rebuilding Together Philadelphia works with neighbors and volunteers to make homes and whole city blocks safer and healthier.
Feeling connected to our neighbors and community reduces our stress and makes us healthier. Senior Community Services keeps older engaged in their community.
Staying connected to our community requires safe and inviting spaces to come together. With the help of Urban Tree Connection, neighbors transform vacant spaces into gardens where people can work, play and relax together.
Thanks to this year’s GSK IMPACT Award winners for making our days, and communities, healthier!
