Last week, Jack Bailey (right), North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and others announced the winners of our $1 million GSK IMPACT Grant to a group of seven nonprofit organizations called Fostering Wellness.
This 2-year initiative will focus on expanding opportunities for young people aging out of the foster care system across Wake, Durham and Orange counties in North Carolina – including job training, mentorships with local businesses and programs to learn about healthy cooking and eating.
More than 20 local young people joined us at the PNC Arena in Raleigh to get a head start on the initiative, donning chef hats and jackets to prepare and serve healthy snacks to the crowd of 200 community members and GSK employees who came to hear the exciting news!
23-year-old Marcella Middleton spoke on behalf of those served by Fostering Wellness about her experience aging out of the foster care system and how this grant will help young people transition to an independent, healthy adulthood. To the young people in the room, Marcella said “we are not defined by our lives in foster care – this is your opportunity so lead the way!”
With Marcella’s moving words capping off our incredible speakers, guests were able to meet with the Fostering Wellness young people and sample the tasty – and healthy! – snacks that they had prepared with PNC Arena catering staff .
